Information for French Language School Students

Choosing a Class:  Students who are not beginners should find out their level by taking the on-line test on our web site:  www.afcville.org, under “School”.  After receiving the test results, AFC will contact the student to discuss the options.  In some cases, an interview with an AFC teacher or a trial class may be required to determine the speaking and comprehension ability of the student.

Payment of Tuition:  Payments can be made by cash or check to the Alliance Française.  Students are required to pay a minimum of half the course fees, all of the books fees, and AFC membership by the first day of class.  Upon request, it is possible to pay tuition in installments using post-dated checks.  In such cases half the tuition is due by the first day of class and the remainder is due the 15th of the following month.  If a student cannot attend all classes and can provide the dates upon registration, those classes can be deducted from tuition.  A $35 processing fee will be charged for checks returned for insufficient funds.

24 Hour Cancellation Policy: "No-shows" are not refundable. If a student must miss a class and notifies the teacher more than 24 hours in advance (or has a legitimate emergency), the class can be made up free of charge during the following session.  A maximum of 2 classes per session can be made up.

Inclement Weather Policy:  As a general rule, if the Albermarle County Public schools are closed due to inclement weather, Alliance Française classes will be cancelled for the entire day as well, however, there may be some exceptions.  In the event of bad weather conditions, students should either check their email for a message from the Teacher, or call the office to know if there will be class or not (if no one is in the office, the outgoing message will provide the information).  Cancelled classes will be made up at the end of the session, unless otherwise agreed with the teacher.

Student Sign-in Sheet:  Students are required to sign a sign-in sheet at the start of each class to document their attendance.

Homework for Absentees:  Students who miss a class will receive by email their next class assignments by their teacher within two days of missing a class.

Course Books:  The office maintains a stock of classroom books for sale.  Teachers will advise students of the necessary books for their classes and books may be purchased whenever the office is open.  Payment is by check or cash.

Lending Library:  Books kept in the AFC library (Classroom 1) may be signed out by students for their use.  A sign-out sheet is located on the bulletin board.  Books may be checked out for a school session at a time and must be returned at the end of each school session.  There will be a charge for unreturned books.
